Science Curriculum

Science Intent Statement

At Nether Edge Primary School, we recognise and instil the value that science can change lives. As a school, we believe strongly that teaching the scientific method to students is teaching them how to think, learn, solve problems and make informed decisions. We believe that this knowledge and skill set are integral to every aspect of a student's life both in terms of their education and wider well-being, from home life to school to chosen career.

Our science curriculum will encourage pupils to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. It will aim to nurture and develop a student’s observational, prediction and analytical skills and will be delivered through a carefully planned curriculum involving the sequential teaching of knowledge and concepts. The ambitious curriculum will be administered through many different types of investigations and experiments, some of which include: observing over time; pattern seeking; identifying, classifying and grouping; comparative and fair testing (controlled investigations) and researching using secondary sources.  Our science curriculum looks to develop language and oracy drawing upon both specialist vocabulary and technical terminology.

We want scientists who are:

  • Curious
  • Risk takers
  • Problem solvers
  • Critical thinkers
