Curriculum

Be prepared. Be ready!

Nether Edge Intent Statement

Genuinely, and with integrity, our curriculum will prepare pupils for the next stage, whatever that may be.

With reading and vocabulary at the core of our curriculum, children learn the full scope fo the National Curriculum from Year 1 to Year 6. Our Foundation Stage curriculum gives children an exceptional start which is built on coherently from Year 1.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced in all subjects. Knowledge is logically grouped into themes in each subject, and we are explicit in how current learning builds on prior knowledge. Retrieval Practice (which we call Must Dos) both check for retention and give reminders to reinforce memory. We know that if nothing has been remembered, nothing has been learnt.

Each subject has been planned to enable us to contextualise learning for our community and the present day. For example, in History, we explore the theme of equality, and in art, learn about trailblazing artists who conquered stereotypes. Every child sees themselves represented in our curriculum.

We want:

  • Avid readers, with reading used as a tool to learn in every subject
  • Children who can articulate well through speaking, using subject-specific vocabulary
  • Children to understand they are part of an interconnected world which they have the power and opportunity to influence for the better
  • All curriculum teaching to alter children’s long term memory

Our curriculum is underpinned by 3 core values:

Equalities

Our curriculum offers children the chance to learn about difference in our world and build understanding, tolerance, co-operation, empathy and appreciation skills.

Worldwide citizens

Our curriculum allows children to explore responsibility, their own aspirations and ambitions as well as develop excellent communication skills.

Technologies

Our curriculum is designed, delivered and evidenced through an up to date and meaningful use of technology to enhance learning and produce amazing outcomes.

Reading and vocabulary run as threads through every curriculum area. These are carefully plans and identified in long, medium and short term plans.

Each of these values links to a concept which the children will cover across a period of time within their curriculum learning.

Concepts include:

  • Equality
  • Gender
  • Legacy
  • Empire
  • Compare and contrast
