French
At Nether Edge, we recognise that our children start with school with a natural desire to learn languages. We want to foster this innate skill through an engaging, reading and oracy lead, and well-structured curriculum.
Our French curriculum will provide pupils with the confidence to become excellent speakers, readers and writers in a foreign language. We aim to develop a passion for French through progressive practice in conversational French, a focus on vocabulary and phonics skills to develop an excitement amongst children for foreign languages through active, fun and well sequenced lessons.
We aspire to create:
- Confident and accurate speakers of French, who can engage in spontaneous conversation using excellent pronunciation
- Word curious children who develop their ability to understand, read and write in French, using a range of grammatical structures
- An appreciation for stories, songs, poems and rhymes in French
- A French curriculum that alters children’s long term memory
What this looks like in our school
All children enjoy a progressive conversational programme of French that starts from Y3. This includes day to day communication such as greetings, doing the register and classroom instruction. Furthermore, all KS2 children have a 30-minute French lesson every week. EYFS and KS1 children learn the register and basic greetings.
Throughout the year there will be several celebration days when children will get involved in authentic French experiences such as European Day of Languages and Bastille Day.
