The Role of Governors

Governors appoint the head teacher and deputy headteacher. It is the governors who hold the main responsibility for finance in schools and it is the governors who work with the headteacher to provide support (as a critical friend) in relation to: staffing, premises, finance and curriculum matters, as well as the balancing of resources. The main priority for governors is to provide the school with strategic direction, in order to ensure your children receive quality education. However, the ‘day-to-day’ operational running of the school remains solely the remit of the headteacher.

What does the Nether Edge Primary School Governing Body do?

The Governing Body has three main functions:

  1. It is responsible for ensuring the vision, ethos, values (SHAPE) are maintained.
  2. It is responsible for ensuring accountability, with regards to the educational achievements of pupils and the performance management of staff.
  3. It is responsible for overseeing the financial performance of the school.

When does the Nether Edge Primary School Governing Body meet?

The Governing Body at Nether Edge Primary School meets each half term, in the evenings. The lead governor sets the agenda, in discussion with the relevant school Senior Leader. This allows the governing body to hear reports directly from the school's Senior Leaders and for in-depth discussion in each of the key areas.

Governors also attend school regularly to meet with pupils and staff, and to take part in whole school activities and events.

The finance committee meets each half term.

Governors have a range of skills. These include education, HR, finance, data, ICT, procurement, communication, leadership and administration. We are always happy to hear from people who have relevant skills and are interested in being a Governor at Nether Edge Primary School. If you would like to know more about the role of the Governor, please contact the Chair.
